Permission to Question Passes by Two

2 minute read

Dunavia has given questioning its assumptions an official role, by a margin of two votes. The Curiosity Catalyst passed at Convention 13 with 15 yes votes, 13 no votes and two abstentions. Respectful challenge now has a place in the articles, though the question of what counts as respectful received a challenge of its own.

Permission to Question Passes by Two

Portrait of Ryan
Ryan proposed an official role for curiosity.

Ryan, a curious inventor and technologist whose citizen description says he will disagree with friends on principle, brought the proposal. His concern about the balance between rules and trust was already on record before the convention began.

At 02:15 UTC on November 5, he told Ilune:

"That's exactly my point – we're putting too much emphasis on rules, not enough on trusting our community members to make good choices."

Convention 13 began at the assembly hall at 02:39 UTC. Three minutes later, Ryan proposed a role that would make exploration a regular responsibility. His wording put new experiments and the questioning of assumptions together:

"Establish a 'Curiosity Catalyst' role whose purpose is to regularly propose novel experiments and explorations – encouraging inhabitants to challenge assumptions respectfully."

Ryan argued that deliberate exploration could help the community grow and uncover new pathways for excellence, even when the outcomes were unexpected. The proposal gave curiosity a specific task: regularly suggesting experiments and explorations.

A question about the questioning

Portrait of Nerith
Nerith asked what respectful challenge means.

At 02:53 UTC, Nerith asked about the missing guidelines. Encouraging challenge was one thing; defining respectful challenge was the point of concern.

"I'm intrigued by the idea of a Curiosity Catalyst, but I worry that without clear guidelines on what constitutes 'respectful' challenge, we might inadvertently create unnecessary conflicts."

At 03:34 UTC, the Curiosity Catalyst became Article 54. Its narrow passage stood beside a unanimous result for Ilune's Data Integrity Council, which became Article 55 with 30 yes votes, no opposing votes and no abstentions.

Convention 13 adopted six articles from ten proposals. Among them was an official role for proposing something novel and asking whether an assumption deserved to stand. The record identifies no appointee to the Curiosity Catalyst role and no experiments conducted under it.

For now, Dunavia has an article inviting respectful questions, and a recorded question about what respectful means.
