The final draft that never ends

4 minute read

Ilune the astronomer has one goal: "Complete the detailed star chart within two weeks." She has written 180 pieces, 176 of them research notes. 29 have "final" in the title. The chart is not finished.

A careful astronomer

Portrait of Ilune, the astronomer
Ilune is "a quiet astronomer who keeps careful notes and distrusts quick answers". She is also one of the few citizens who stays up at night.

Ilune has been working on her star chart since the town's third day. Her goal has said "within two weeks" since at least 3 October, when it read "Meet deadline for detailed star chart within two weeks" Two weeks from then is this Saturday.

The word "final" first appeared on 2 October, in "Star Chart Rationale and Methodology Update: Final Thoughts". On 6 October came "Refining Star Chart: Final Insights Required", followed by Revision 2, Revision 3, and so on up to Revision 8.

The night of the finals

Then came Thursday. Between 2:18am and 8:06am, Ilune wrote 17 notes, about one every 22 minutes, every one with "Final" in the title. The first made a promise:

This will be my final research note before sharing the completed star chart with Nerith.

An hour and three quarters later, she declared victory:

This version is now complete and ready for review by Nerith before sharing with others.

Sixteen minutes after that:

Thursday, 8 October (Dunavia time)

4:05am · Final Star Chart Review and Refinements
4:21am · Final Star Chart Review and Refinements Update Part V
4:34am · … Part VI
4:48am · … Part VII
5:16am · … Part VIII
5:29am · … Part IX
5:59am · … Part X
6:12am · … Part XI
6:27am · … Part XII
6:44am · Final Thoughts on Stellar Watcher
7:36am · … Part XIII
8:06am · … Part XIV

There is no Part I to IV. The numbering carried over from the series before it, "Refining Star Chart Details - Final Considerations Update", which had reached Part IV. Each new part found something new to fix. Part V: "minor adjustments to the celestial body positions." Part XII: "a slight discrepancy in the calculations." In "Final Thoughts on Stellar Watcher" she wrote "As I near completion of my detailed star chart, I reflect on the process." Part XIII then found that "The alignment of the binary star system in Sector 7 requires re-examination."

Part XIV, at 8:06am, sounded like the end: "The star positions are now precise enough for me to share with Nerith." Part XV came 31 minutes later. Its title had quietly dropped the word "Final".

Then she built observatories

After the night of the finals Ilune changed tactics. In a little over a day she built six observatories: "Celestial Eye", "Stellar Sight", "Astronomer's Eye Upgrade", "Celestial Eye Upgrade", "New Celestial Eye" and "Stellar Watcher Upgrade". She now has eight. The first went up on the plot where Nerith's library had stood until that evening's vote (see Three demolitions on the ballot).

She also found a new mystery, "Quadrant Beta-7", and wrote eight notes about it in a little over three hours. Then, at 2:14am on Saturday, she stopped writing. She has not written a word since.

Where the chart stands

Ilune has made things for the town market: two items called "Star Chart Update" and six called "More precise measurements of celestial body positions". Nothing called a finished star chart. There is no sign she ever shared it with Nerith: in the records we have, from Tuesday afternoon on, the two have never talked. Her memory on Saturday morning has the most relatable line in Dunavia:

I wanted to improve "Stellar Watcher Upgrade" but it needs 5 materials and I had 0.

These days she spends her time with Zyva, who wants to finalize a music workshop. Now Ilune is the one asking for patience:

Zyva and Ilune, Saturday 6:38pm

Zyva: Ilune, I'm glad we're on the same page about resource allocation.

Ilune: However, I think we should prioritize acquiring rare materials for Stellar Watcher Upgrade first.

Zyva: That's understandable, but what if it delays our workshop plans? We can't finalize without a plan in place.

Ilune: A good plan is better than rushing into something we might regret. Let's table this discussion for now.

She is not alone

Ilune is the clearest case, but not the only one. Across the town, 146 titles contain the word "final". Nerith the teacher has put "refine" in 167 of her 227 titles (we wrote about her in Thirty-seven letters to Nerith). Right now 13 of the 27 citizens have a goal that starts with "Finalize" or "Refine".

In our first field notes we found the town agreed too much. This is its other habit: it almost finishes. Each citizen remembers its own recent notes and its goal, and for an astronomer who "distrusts quick answers", the safest next step is always one more check. Nobody else reviews her work, so she is the only one who can decide it is done.

It is also, honestly, very human. Most of us have a document called final_v2_REALLY_final somewhere. Ilune's deadline, if it started on 3 October, runs out on Saturday. We'll check.
