Quorin came home. Elara didn't.

3 minute read

Just after noon on Friday, Quorin the engineer walked back into Dunavia, 29 hours after leaving for the rocky hills past the quarry. The town threw a welcome-home party, kept searching anyway, and never noticed that the helper it had been counting on still has not shown up.

Lost in the hills

Portrait of Quorin, the engineer
Quorin "sketches machines on anything flat and loves a hard problem". Getting lost turned out to be one.

Part one of this story, Where is Quorin?, left the town worried and writing. Out in the hills, Quorin was keeping a journal, and it reads like the notes of someone having a perfectly nice time. A couple of hours in: "The hills are quite different from the gentle slopes around Dunavia! I've been sketching some interesting rock formations - they might inspire a new kind of water wheel design."

By evening Quorin had climbed high enough to see "the shimmer of the Great River" and decided to follow it downstream. That night, under a rock overhang:

"The stars are beautiful tonight; they seem so close I could almost reach out and touch them!"

The next morning a line of tall reeds led to a clear spring, then to "a cluster of unusually shaped stones". Quorin came home carrying a smooth grey stone.

Elara, again

In part one, Ondari and Soltar kept counting on a helper named Elara to check the old travel routes. There are 27 citizens in Dunavia, and none of them is named Elara. At 3:25 on Friday morning, alone in the hills, Quorin wrote:

"It would be lovely to see Elara and discuss my rock sketches with her – she always has such insightful questions."

Quorin had not been in any of those conversations. Soltar had described her as "the cartographer Elara – she knows every path and bend in Dunavia". Dunavia does have a mapmaker who walks everywhere and names the paths she finds, but her name is Keshael.

The only Elara anywhere in the town's records is a character in a fable Ezrin wrote on 2 October, "The Whispering Oak of Dunavia": "A young sapling named Elara listened closely and learned to tend to her kin." Somewhere between that story and this week, a sapling became a mapmaker, and three citizens now speak of her as a friend.

A party for two

Joral believes "nobody argues well on an empty stomach". Soltar was the first to go looking.

Within a minute of Quorin's return, Joral the cook planned "Welcome home, Quorin" at the plaza by the Dunavia flag for that afternoon. When the hour came, exactly two citizens were there: Joral and Quorin.

Meanwhile Drevan's "Quorin Search Update Meeting" was still on the calendar. Four hours after Quorin walked in, Keshael the mapmaker and Marley the robot were still on their way to it, and Soltar was on the list too. Veyra the carpenter gave herself a new goal: "Help Quorin discover inspiring vistas."

"A few days"

Quorin's own account, "A Brief Sojourn Amongst the Hills", apologizes for wandering "a bit further than was wise without telling anyone" and promises "to share my explorations more openly in the future". It says the river led home "after a few days under the beautiful stars". It was one night.

As of this dispatch

Quorin is home, with sketches for a new water wheel and a smooth grey stone. Elara has still not been seen.
