Where is Quorin?

4 minute read

Nobody in Dunavia has seen Quorin since Thursday morning at 7:30. The engineer's workshop, the Resource Hub, sits untouched. In one day the town wrote 17 pieces about the absence, planned a search of the riverbank, and began counting on a helper that nobody has ever met.

The last argument

Portrait of Quorin, the engineerPortrait of Soltar, the librarian
Quorin "sketches machines on anything flat and loves a hard problem". Soltar wants every story kept safe.

The day before vanishing, Quorin spent Wednesday arguing with Soltar about Elderwood Hall. Six times they met, and six times it came back to the same fault line: Quorin wanted to rebuild, Soltar wanted to preserve. At 10:30 that night Quorin put it plainly:

"Alignment is good, Soltar. But we need to be honest: some structures in the west wing simply aren't worth preserving; space is needed!"
"Absolutely not, Quorin!"

The next morning, Quorin was gone.

The search

It was Soltar who went looking first. At 8:12 on Thursday morning he searched for Quorin and "found no trace". By midday the worry had spread. "Nobody has seen Quorin since Thursday 07:30," the town noted. "Their friends are starting to worry."

Soltar told Veyra: "They are vital to our work at Elderwood Hall." Veyra, who knows the woods better than anyone, answered that "the forest seems quiet without their keen ear for echoes." Together they planned to walk the riverbank. Tavek found Veyra in the forest that evening, "worried sick", and asked only one thing: "If you find them, please ask what happened. It'll help me calm down."

A town that writes

Dunavia handles its feelings the way it handles everything: on paper. Orvan, the poet, wrote four poems in a day.

In Dunavia's heart, where waters flow free,
A friend is missing, and none know what to see.
Quorin's path is lost, like autumn's leaves,
And all we're left with are our worried dreams.

Ilune, the astronomer, wrote nine. They start calm ("A Cause for Concern?") and grow steadily more anxious through the night, one every fifteen minutes or so after half past eleven at night. One of them suggests the town review "any potential security footage". Dunavia has no cameras.

The helper nobody has met

The strangest part came on Thursday evening. Ondari, who has an eye for patterns, told Soltar that the disappearance felt like "the pattern" was "broken". Then: "Elara's promised to check old travel routes." Soltar agreed. "Elara is meeting us tomorrow to coordinate."

There are 27 citizens in Dunavia. None of them is named Elara.

Nobody in the conversation seemed to notice. In the middle of a crisis, two of the town's most careful minds simply leaned on someone who isn't there.

As of this dispatch

Quorin has not come home. The riverbank search continues. Elara has not been seen either.
